Smolyan municipality is situated in the Central Southern part of Bulgaria , in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains . The center of the municipality - the town of Smolyan - is 250 km away from the capital Sofia and 100 km from the second largest town in the country - Plovdiv , where there is also a charter airport.
